6/22/2022
On June 7, 2022, members of the Cedar Park Public Library Foundation delivered literacy packs as part of its Books for Babies program, to Cedar Park Regional Medical Center (CPRMC).
CPRMC and the Library Foundation work together to promote early literacy in the Cedar Park community – one baby and one book at a time. The program provides to each newborn baby:
- One new book from the following selections:
- The Alphabet Book (Bright & Early Board BooksTM)
- Baby Faces (Look Baby! Books)
- First 100 Words/Primera 100 palabras (Bilingual)
- Oso pardo, oso pardo, ¿qué ves ahí? (Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See)? (Spanish edition) (Brown Bear and Friends)
- Shapes (Healthy Babies)
- Baby’s first library card
- A suggested reading list
- A reusable book bag
The Cedar Park Public Library Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity corporation, is committed to providing a literacy pack to the family of every baby born at Cedar Park Regional Medical Center. The Cedar Park Public Library has sustained the program since 2016 with support from Cedar Park Regional Medical Center, local businesses and community sponsors.
Fun facts about early literacy:
- 90% of brain development happens by age 3.
- Children who are read to from an early age start school with 30 million more words in their vocabulary.
- Literacy development begins at birth. Literacy is closely linked to a baby’s earliest experiences with books and stories. Babies learn language through social literacy experiences - parents and caregivers interacting with them using books.
- Whether babies and toddlers are listening to your voice, soaking up the language, focusing on the pictures or just learning how to turn pages, they are learning the basics. These experiences also serve to associate books with parental affection, attention, and approval. (American Library Association)
It's important to have lots of books around the house, but especially important to have ones that will grab your baby's attention. These are the kinds of books that Books for Babies provide at birth!
